I just edited the voice version of this in my post to reflect some edting changes. lol the downside of posting work when it is still raw, I will invariably want to poke it some more!
I've done my time in abusive relationships and then some! But then I wonder .... haven't we all?
Thanks for your concern Renee - I love that poetry can inspire these discussions, and the potential for caring and support.
Yes, I have done time in abusive relationships, particularly with my father, who was verbally abusive when I was younger. He still likes to get his jabs in now and then, but I have a thicker skin now--thank goodness for that. Out of curiosity what program do you use to record your voice? The quality of the sound is always very good.
It's a shame we (people, human beings) have to share histories of injustices and abuse - but we do. It's also a shame that we carry secrets which ultimately protect the abusers at least as much if not more, than they protect us. Why should we carry the shame?
At the minute I am recording on GarageBand (yay iMac!) as a podcast; but am also fiddling with the Audacity program. Both programs have the scope to do SO much more than what I am currently producing -- my little voice tracks are quite lame examples of program capacity. I need more time to play with the programs :/
Thank you, Fiona, for your sage and honest words. This is a difficult topic to explore and you are brave to go there. And thank you for the input on your recording programs. I think when my voice matures I will try to record again. I recorded it a few years ago and it sounded so little and high. I suppose if I practice I could deepen it. The recording does add another dimension to one's poetry that brings it to life. The American poet Joanne Kyger once said that poetry's magic is contained in the voice and a poem isn't "activated" or made to work until it is read aloud. I'm considering the whole idea of recording and wondering if it could make me a better poet. I guess I also feel that I don't want to record until I have poems that I really like. How do you know when a poem is ready to be recorded? Do you practice them first in front of an audience to get their reaction? I'm very curious you see.
